How do TCM practitioners use these formulas?
It is traditional for TCM practitioners to use two or more substances in Chinese medicinal formulations to create a customized formula unique to YOUR health presentation. Formulas are prepared in a number of different ways:
- Herbal decoctions. A very traditional method that cooks the raw herbs in water to yield a strong medicinal tea. The most potent method, but longer prep time and strong tastes make this method notvery popular in the west.
- Herbal Granules (powders), are dried and powdered raw herbs that are easily mixed with hot water to make a tea on the go. Less pungent than decoctions but more convenient.
- Tea Pills, are pre-made formulas in a pill or tablet form and the most popular choice in the west. Very convenient, no taste, but no customization and the least potency.
- Liniments, are used for external application, typically for pain.
- Syrups, liquid preparations for coughs and sore throat, also the typical administration for children’s formulas

How are these herbs sourced?
The importing and use of herbs must comply with Health Canada regulations through the Natural Health Products Directorate, and Canada’s Wildlife Trade Law through the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
